With Mother’s Day two weeks away, I decided to make this week’s email all about giving books as gifts. But first, a story about how my own mother wrecked Mother’s Day.
My mom was hard to buy for. She never really made it known to me what she wanted. I was usually left to guess, and I was usually wrong. She didn’t want flowers or chocolate. When I asked her, she was vague, saying things like “I’m sure you can figure it out” or “I’ll be happy with anything”. The truth was, she was never happy. The last time I bought her anything for Mother’s Day was when I was a teenager. She had seen some stoneware dishes and casually mentioned how much she liked them. I took a 40-minute, 2 bus journey to the store that had the dish set to buy it. That shit was heavy. When she unwrapped them on Mother’s Day morning, he response was “Oh, I don’t really like this pattern. Can you return them?”
Heartbroken, I asked her for a lift to the mall. “I have to drive you to return my Mother’s Day present? No. I won’t do that.” I hauled that heavy dish set back on the busses. That was the last time I made any kind of effort for Mother’s Day.
I still feel the hurt from that rejection.
Fortunately, my take away was to be a more grateful mother - all the time. I don’t place unrealistic or seasonal expectations on my sons. In return, they give me thoughtful gifts and like to prank me. On my birthday this year, they presented me with a Bic 4-colour click pen. That was the prank part, but the joke was on them. They had no idea the Bic pen was something 11-year-old me wanted but as the kid of a single working mom, there was no money for fanciful pens. I envied the other kids in my class who had them. The real gift was a GORGEOUS Lamy fountain pen.
I still tear up at how thoughtful this gift was. They know I love fountain pens, an obsession that only developed 7 years ago when osteoarthritis in my left thumb forced me to learn how to write with my right hand. I am now fully ambidextrous, but I can also use a fountain pen without worrying about dragging the side of my hand through the ink. #lefthandedproblems
So, with Mother’s Day on my mind, I put the call out to my independent author community to share their books with me. I posted the form for two weeks, and 13 stepped up to the task. I hope you find a new author your mom will love.

My mum passed away before I started writing novels. Mum always encouraged me to write one, so now with every book I try to make her proud. The relationship between Riley and her mum Maggie is a major thread in Until the Last Star Fades (and parts of it are inspired by my own relationship with my mum), so I can only hope that she would love it.
